Japanese Term for "Actively Listening"? 2016/9/16 07:02
A while ago I read an article that described the term for the Japanese custom of saying "uh-huh", or "yes" or even repeating back the last phrase that the person just said. It purpose is to show that you are actively engaged in the conversation. I cannot remember the name that was used. Does someone know it?

I think the term is 'aizuchi', and its verbal usage is 'aizuchi o utsu'.

Yes,so that is common action "相槌(あいづち/aizuchi)"
very usual custom/manner using into talking each other.

Especially if no aizuchi when by call(include Skype or as sound only) in the night,
no aizuchi long time means "sleeping?","dead(as lose consciousness as serious or not)?","What happened?"
so speaker will be puzzled with worry.
(except just sleeping = 寝落ち/ねおち neochi = fall asleep)

Sometimes include "生返事(なまへんじ/nama-henji)"
or "空返事(からへんじ/kara-henji or そらへんじ/sora-henji)" a lot.

Usually "no look" you just listening especially when you talking about "愚痴(ぐち/guchi/= grumble)" with drinking :)

Drinking with bad grumble is called "絡み酒(からみざけ/karami-zake)" like a snake moving on tree branch.

"karami-zake" is one of 酒癖(さけぐせ/sake-guse).
