Can non Japanese people become a Maiko? 2016/9/18 07:50
My life dream has always been to become a Maiko or Geiko, except I'm Irish, not Japanese, keep in mind I'm currently 14 so it's not like I'm too old at this point or something, if theoretically I moved to Japan at 18, would it be possible to become a Maiko or Geiko?

Technically possible, but very unlikely.

One Australian lady has done it, but these things are basically dying arts.

Possible, but you likely won't be fully accepted by the Japanese people or your fellow maiko/geisha. There are a few foreigners who have become geisha, with a couple of them still practicing - look up their info online. The one in the link provided (Fiona Graham, or Sayuki) is not actually the first foreign geisha (or the only one), and is a bit of a sham artist who likes to twist her story to suit her favour; she did a Reddit AMA recently and people picked her apart.
