Translation help 2017/2/6 12:16
Hello!
Can someone please clarify the true meaning of this sentence...
生活するのにやっとです。
Electronic translations seem to be all over the place

The sentence was included in a discussion about wages/salaries.
Many thanks!

This word "yatto" carries the meaning of "somehow manage to (do something)," "struggle but manage to," "finally after a lot of efforts," etc. So this one says "(the salary/wage is) manageable for living," meaning,

- (The salary/wage I get) is just enough to pay all my bills/to support my living.
...with the emphasis on "juuuust enough," nothing left at all.

Thank you AK!
That makes a lot more sense now.
I appreciate the way you have included the broader meaning of words from Japanese to English.
Much appreciated!
