Living in Saitama 2017/2/14 10:11
Next year I will be studying at Daito Bunka in Takasaka near Higashimatsuyama. First I am not really looking forward to it as I was intending to attend Mejiro university in Tokyo but that has now become impossible.
My question refers to what is life like in and around Higashimatsuyama? what is the commute to Tokyo like?

I am worried about how Rural the university is and how much walking and travel I'll need to possibly do for just shopping needs and going out socialising and such. I want to go to Tokyo often as I have been before and have many friends I'd like to meet up with and share a drink with. When planning to go to Mejiro I was 11/10 as far as being excited goes but now I am 1/10 for Daito Bunka I am just scared I'll be bored and feel trapped and isolated in Takasaka. Thank you for any advice you can give.

Takasaka station is on the Tobu Tojo line, so you have direct trains to Ikebukuro, which takes roughly 50 minutes by express trains. The last local trains from Ikebukuro are at around 23:30, so going into Tokyo shouldn't be very difficult if you live near the station.

I have never been to Higashimatsuyama city, but it looks like a typical suburban Saitama bed town from what I've seen. There are supermarkets and restaurants around the station, and Wikipedia says there are lots of shops catering to students, so you'll probably be able to shop without a car.

You are worried about going to live in city of 100,000 people and that it is a rural hick town? So why did you want to study at a university in Japan in the first place - to waste time in Tokyo, or actually work at your studies? Might be useful to understand your motivation and why you are disappointed - and there is probably a reason you didn't get your first choice university that you have not mentioned.

(Maybe I'm being an old curmudgeon that actually worked hard during my university years, but really, Tokyo isn't far away.)

Kawagoe is a not far and a great place to live and socialize and even Ikebukuro is at a very doable distance and you have always the possibility to base yourself somewhere in the middle between uni and Tokyo; a lot of people working in Tokyo have a longer commute.

(Note that the Tobu Tojo line is a bit prone to suicides especially around Tokiwadai Station -- the 'personal injury' that you see mentioned in the travel information on screen)
