Has anyone had to wait 6 months for a COE?

Hi All, my new employer has applied for my COE but their lawyer said it could take up to 6 months for it to be issued.. earliest possibly 4/5 months.
Has it ever taken this long for anyone or are they just playing it safe? They said its a busy time of year in the immigration offices.
I am applying for a 3 year WORK VISA & I am from the U.K.
