Working in Japan as a photographer? 2017/4/5 14:24
Konnichiha friends,

I am an American photographer working in another Asian country, and am interested in moving to Japan in one year. I lived in Kansai for 3 months two years ago, and my short trips to Japan since then have only fueled my hunger to return for a longer stay.

I have been researching potential visa options, but have not come with anything solid. I am talented in photography, but do not have the required materials for an artist visa.

Would I be better off teaching English and transitioning into photography at that point? I hope to freelance in Japan as a photographer.

Any tips are greatly appreciated. I am starting early so hopefully I can get something in line.

There is no "work visa" that covers working freelance; those who do are on spouse visas or suchlike. Even if you have a "work visa" for teaching English, you won't be allowed to work as a photographer with it (except on an "occasional basis").

I agree with the answer above.

teaching English and transitioning into photography at that point?
Please don't do that, it is not only illigal but also it causes arrest.

As long as you don't meet creteria to apply Artist Visa, maybe
Teach English (Engineer/Specialist in humanities/International services Visa)
«
Marry Japanese (Spouse Visa)
«
Work as a freelance photograper (Spous Visa)

Suggesting to anyone to get married in order to get a visa is horrible advice...

@krr, you don't need to blame on the others.
Good users here know that the advice of a marriage option is just an sarcam to Sean Dalton, who already knows already that he doesn't meet creteria to apply a visa for photographer but still attemps to be a freelance photographer inJapan illgeally, taking advantage of being an English teacher.
Yes, there are many trollers who post wrong anser on purpose, but .(guest) has agreeed with a right answer by Firas.

Anyway, here is my answer (because I am here to write an aswer, not to blame on krr).
Neither being an English teacher in order to work as a photographer nor marring Japanese is not good.
The first option is illegal as mentioned already, the second option sounds even insluting Japanese, which probably krr wants to say.

Even "Artist" status does not really allow working freelance. For one thing, you need a sponsor, you can't just go to Japan and wait for someone to hire you...
