What kind of visa do I get? 2017/4/19 08:28
Hello, helpfull bretheren!

I am a Bulgarian gal living in Austria, aiming to teach English in Japan. :D But what kind of visa do I apply for and how do I obtain it?

Finding an English teaching job as a non-native doesn't seem to be all too rare if one is already in Japan. But if not, it seems that schools do not favor non-natives, because it is difficult to obtain an instructor visa for them.

I hear that Eikawas have you apply for a "specialist in humanities" visa. However, Eikawas wouldn't be my first choice. If I go for an Eikawa and a specialist in humanities visa, could I then somehow change it into an instructor visa?

Does anyone know of nan-native English teachers in Japan and what their visa situation is?

Any advice is appreciated!

Thank you in advance. :)

Finding an employer in Japan who is interested in hiring you as an English teacher comes first. The sponsor will apply for a visa on your behalf so that you can come and work for them.

What do you think is the difference between "Instructor" and "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Service"?

By the way, language instruction falls under the "International Service" subcategory of the latter status, not "Specialist in Humanities". "Specialis in Humanities" is the counterpart of "Engineer" for social sciences/humanities fields such as sociology, philosophy, economics, etc.

You get the visa your job offer qualifies you for. You seem to have the process backwards- you apply for a job, then when they decide to hire you they begin the paperwork for the visa that covers that job category. If you are an ALT it's instructor, and if you're working in an eikaiwa it's specialist in humanities. If you come over for an eikaiwa on an SiH visa, then get hired as an ALT say a year later, you would go change your visa type to match your new job after you have a contract drawn up, but the job offer and contract have to come first.
