working holiday visa to work visa 2017/4/25 02:12
Hey guys,

Hopefully someone out there who's gone through this recently can give me a clear answer.

If you move to Japan on a working holiday visa, can you then change your status of residence to a normal work visa? If so how far into the 1 year WHV did you do it? And lets say: if you're working for the same company throughout your WHV, and then change your residence status, will the company need to sponsor you / will you need a certificate of eligibility?

Any info on this is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

You can't get a work visa without a sponsor, so yes, the company would have to sponsor you.

Note that the working holiday visa is not designed as a way to get into work in Japan; it is for long-term travellers who wish to work for short periods to fund their travels.

Yes, you can file a Change of Status of Residence instead of a CoE if you're doing it while you're on WHV in Japan. The requirements are the same though so you'll need a degree (or +10 years work xp) and a credible sponsor.

Like it's mentioned, the comapany has to support your work visa, so you can't really decide how far in 1 year WHV you can switch visas.
You have to prove yourself to the company that you are worth going through visa process...so there's no answer to your question!

The main purpose of your application for a working holiday visa has to be the "holiday" part, not the "work" part. If immigration thinks you are trying to play games with them, you stand a very, very good chance of being rejected.

If you have a company sponsoring you, AND you fulfill other necessary requirements (i.e. degree, experience), then it should be trivial to change your visa class.

Reminder that visa applications are processee by embassies, not by immigration. If immigration is involved, it's in the issuance of CoEs, but WHVs do not require one.

Firas; yes, sorry you are correct. My mistake.
