Extending WHV whilst waiting for CoE 2017/7/21 00:13
Hello all,

I've currently got 1 month left on WHV (UK) and I went to immigration to change my status to a working visa (specialist in humanitie s/ international services), I have all the documents from my company but the immigration officer told me there is a treaty between UK and Japan and I'm required to apply for the CoE (Certificate of Eligibilty). Now they told me this could take between 1 month to 3 months to process but since my visa expires next month I'm worried I won't get it in time.

Can I apply to extend my WHV to allow extra time for my CoE to come through and continue working? Immigration never mentioned this to me, they just said if it doesn't come before my visa expires I'll have to leave the country.

I wonder if anybody has any experience or something with this? I'm pretty worried.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you in advance! :)

I believe WH arrangement is a very special arrangement that officially immigration's position is that one should leave Japan once when it is about to expire.

What is the maximum time UK citizens are allowed under the WHV? I know some nationalities can extend from six months to one year, but don't know if it includes the U.K.

If you are at the max already, and the CoE is not issued in time, still I believe you are allowed to stay in Japan until immigration reaches a conclusion (check your passport to see if you have the proper stamp that tells that your case is under review).
Ir else you need to leave Japan once, or change your status to Temporary Visitor if it is possible (on that status you cannot work though). In any case call the immigration bureau for a clear answer.

Just to be clear, when you said applying for COE, it means that normal procedure will require you to apply for your work visa at Japanese Embassy in your country together with COE.
Which mean you have to do it from outside Japan and you're suppose to leave Japan.

You should check and confirm with your company and immigiration , to go for Change of Status, where in this case, you can stay in Japan even though your WHV status expired,
as this allow applicant to stay until change of status application result is known.

You can apply for your WHV status to be extended, since it is non-related to your working visa application.
Just try apply for the extension.
