English teacher without a degree? 2017/7/27 11:45
I am from the Philippines and I am 22 years old. I am online English Teacher for almost 2 years. I am wondering If I can work in Japan as an English teacher without a degree?

Generally, you would need a minimum of 3 years in order to qualify for a visa. I'm not sure whether online teaching will be deemed the equivalent of teaching in a school or similar, so immigration may not be willing to accept it, even if you have 3 years. Finally, you need an employer willing to sponsor your visa. That may be difficult, given that it's pretty easy for these companies to get Westerners which look the part. Irrespective of whether or not you're a better teacher, the Western image sells.

I am a non-native English speaker and recently applied at Gaba and Berlitz. These employers can get a "specialist in humanities" visa if you have three or more years of experience but they also asked me for a degree when they filed the paperwork for the Immigration. Maybe some smaller cram schools accept experienced teachers without a degree but I'm not sure if Immigration will okay a visa.
Maybe others could post their experiences.

Seeing that you are 22, are those "two years" a full-time position, for one thing, and was it teaching English IN English to non-native speakers of the English language, or was it possibly teaching English to your local students using your local language? What they seek is usually people who can teach English IN English.
