Shimanami Kaido to Imabari 2017/8/29 15:06
We are planning to cycle the shimanami kaido tomorrow but I've injured my ankle climbing mount fuji and am not sure it is going to hold up for the full route.

Are there any points on the route where we can stop, drop off the bikes and get a bus/ferry the rest of the way?

Would be good to have an 'escape route' if necessary.

Yes, there are buses. I don't know what you mean by "drop off the bikes".

Are you renting a bike or brought your own?

There are bike shops along the way. There are also one-way bike rental shops. At least one bike shop rents power-assisted e-bikes. I am not sure if all bike rental shops have a station on every island along the way.

We are renting from here http://shimanami-cycle.or.jp/rental/english and they list a number of intermediate stations along the way where you can drop the bikes off if we can't make it all the way.

Are there bus lines than run close to these drop off points we can use? Any links with timetables would be very much appreciated.

Looks like there are two bus companies running between Onomichi and Imabara, but they don't run frequently.

First one is Setouchi Bus, but its bus only makes one stop between Onomichi and Imabara, at Innoshima. So it may not be useful for your purpose. Their schedule anyway is:

The second bus company Onomichi Bus seems to make only three round trips a day (these 3 can carry bikes if reserved, I am not sure if there are other passenger-only buses that run more frequently). See their web site and schedule below. Departing Imabari at 08:50, 13:53, and 16:38.

Looks like the best solution could be the ferry as we could cycle to the ports. The ferry here http://www.ehimekisen.server-shared.com/geiyo1.html seems to run frequently (although there are a couple that don't take bikes). Only problem is that I don't know the names of the intermediate ports or where they are (I'm not being particularly successful on Google).

I was able to find another bus line but the last stop was the Setsoda parking area and this wasn't particularly close to a drop off terminal for the bikes (nearest was on the other side of the bridge) on Omishima.
