Are both of these sentence the same?

醤油をつけて食べます would be the right sentence to say "(we) eat it by adding soy sauce (to the food)."

The verb 置きます・置く in the first sentence is "place (something in a location)," "put (something down)," so it doesn't fit into this sentence.

For つけて for this meaning、it is 付けて, but we often write it as つけて.


There is a similar expression - some people might do this with some dishes -
醤油につけて食べます "(we) eat it by dipping (the food) in soy sauce," in which case the kanji for つけて for "dipping (into soy)" would be 浸けて.
