I think the Hakone page sums up the sights quite nicely: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5200.html
We bought the bus pass and got around like that, use Google Maps to look up the locations and plan how to get from one to the other.
Check for any special events in the area, we were in time for the Goshinkasai Motomiya Reisai festival on top of Mt Komagatake: http://monochrome.me.uk/news/hakone-goshinkasai-motomiya-reisai-festiv...

The Hakone town tourism site has lots of basic information. https://www.hakone.or.jp/en/
For more timely information, they keep a pretty good English Facebook page going too. One my last visit, I sent them a message through Facebook and had a chatbot for Facebook Messenger and someone from the tourism office respond....really cool, even for little things (I asked for a good hiking path). https://www.facebook.com/HakoneTravel/
