Shinjuku to Nikko

We are staying in Tokyo (Yoyogi station) and are planning to do a day trip to Nikko.
I've read online that there are express trains from shinjuku to Nikko, however these sound like they are available from different companies so it's a bit confusing. How do we get these tickets? Would you agree that this train would be our best option to go to Nikko?
How would we find the departure / return times?
Thank you.

There are 2 rail systems linking Tokyo area to Nikko area: JR and Tobu.
If you have a JR Pass, you probably want to take a Shinkansen from Tokyo station (or Ueno station) to Utsunomiya, then transfer onto a Nikko Line train to reach Nikko. It's all covered if you have a JR Pass.
If you don't have a JR Pass, Tobu rail is recommended, because it's cheaper. With Tobu, there are many direct trains (about 2 every hour, thus more flexible) leaving Asakusa staion (or Kita-senju) bound for Tobu Nikko. But if you insist on taking the direct train (w/o transfers) from Shinjuku, there is only one per day that departs at 07:30. If you miss that train, there are other trains but they require transfers.
Return trip is the same deal - only one train per day that goes from Tobu Nikko directly to Shinjuku, it departs at 16:37. Again, not flexible and there is no room for error. If you insist on direct train between Shinjuku and Tobu Nikko, I suggest you have a backup plan (know the way from Shinjuku to Asakusa or Kita-senju).
