Is Tsurunoyu onsen worth it? 2017/9/17 04:02
Hello,

I will be traveling from Niigata to Hokkaido. I am considering taking the train from Niigata to Akita to visit Tsurunoyu onsen for one night before returning to Akita city and continuing on by ferry. The other option is just to take the ferry from Niigata to Hokkaido and skip Akita.

I am wondering if this detour to Tsurunoyu is worth it given how famous this place has become. Is it overrated? Overrun with tourists? I will already be visiting Yuzawa onsen in Niigata.

Thanks

Is it overrated?

No. Especially not if you manage to reserve a room in the Honjin.

Overrun with tourists?

It can be a little wild during the day on certain days, but if you stay overnight, it will be calm due to the natural limitation on how many people can stay overnight. If you don't intend to stay overnight, I think it is not worth the effort.

I especially want to avoid mobs of rude Chinese and Taiwanese tourists.

You could be very disappointed, they might follow you instead???
