Are Snow tires necessary in Izu? 2017/9/25 00:18
I will be driving from Tokyo to Izu Peninsula around middle of December and driving around Izu. Would snow tires be nessary? I hear there have been freak snow storms in the region in recent years.

No need usual, but rate of snow falling is under 1% exist.
So, do not know if it will snow on the day you drive.
Watch 10days forecast carefully.

Izu is warmer than Tokyo by sea side as location with warmer sea stream fr west/south no worry,
but around Gotemba IC(Œδ“aκIC) where placed near Mt.Fuji is higher ground with pass, this is the point.
ExpWay company also announced as one of big notes.

(behind the graph is Mt.Fuji, although actual Mt. Fuji has more altitude)

In southern Izu, it only very rarely snows, and when it does, the volume of snow is so low and melt occurs so fast you definitely wouldn't need snow tires. We haven't seen snow at all in the two years we've lived here. Central and northern Izu do get some snow, so it's a good idea to keep an eye on the weather forecast.
