You can book on the day at their stations. Or in advance at JR stations in the kanasi area.

Thank you for your prompt reply! Is it too late to book the tickets when I am in Kansai, especially during red leaf foliage season?

You can book online via JR-Odekake net if you are a member of Club J-West. But I think this is unrealistic for many foreigners. I am a member of Club J-West (I am a Japanese and of course can read Japanese) and tried to book for 19th but all the seats are sold out. This train is very popular and the tickets are rapidly sold out. http://sagano-kanko.co.jp/en/ http://sagano-kanko.co.jp/en/josyaken.php http://sagano-kanko.co.jp/en/kuseki.php#kuseki-today All trains have a "open-air car" the seats of which are sold only on the day of operation. This ticket is sold first-come-first-served basis. So you might be able to buy it or not. I think you might better think other way to see Arashiyama. https://amanaimages.com/info/infoRF.aspx?SearchKey=10334000002&GroupCD...This is from Kameyama observatory. https://goo.gl/ZU6n7X
