Travel in the Typhoon season 2017/10/22 17:05
Hello.
Now that Typhoon Lan is on the way to Japan I have a question regarding my adventures in Japan next year. I will cycling across Japan for about 2 months around September-October and my question is that how badly a typhoon effects the weather exactly? I try to figure out how many days will I loose if a Typhoon catch me because I will do camping most of the time.
Thanks.

NORMALLY between mid Sep and mid Nov in Honshu the weather is extremely stable and sunny. So called: Akibare (autumn sun).

That's how I planned my bicycle travel through Japan this year:
http://bicycletraveljapan.blogspot.com

Hope this page helps you in the preparation. Specially check out the Planning part.

However this year there is one late typhoon and akibare was kind of "switched off" between Kanto and South for the last 10 days (roughly). (Not sure if the two events are connected)

This year's typhoon I think is the latest ever (or at least since a long time) recorded in Japan. So hopefully this will not repeat when you come next year.

The last two years there was definitely a long time of akibare. It is this year that is out of the norm.

Early September there are always still typhoons. If you plan to start already early September I would advise to start in Hokkaido (that's anyway the logical point to start). As in the Kanto and south it is still very hot then (well, too hot and humid in my experience for cycling)

This year I was fortunate and the first week of September in Hokkaido was PERFECT!

Enjoy your cycle trip through Japan.

Just as an addition.
If you are okay to cycle and camp in rain (normal rain, not typhoon) then each typhoon will really only cost you a day. IF you are where the typhoon hits.
Typhoon 21 ( in Japan typhoons just get numbers no cute names) is extraordinarily large and makes a visit to all of Japan. But most typhoons are smaller and /or don't hit everywhere.

You can use the weather forecast and just get a hotel for that day and stay put. Ideally obviously you would be in some onsen place (e.g. I am now in Hirayu onsen) and just sit it out comfortably soaking in thermal waters).

Just as an example:
Yesterday it would have been still okay to cycle (if you cycle in normal rain) and tomorrow morning the typhoon will be all gone where I am.

No, no. There are two transitions from the tropical climate in July-August. The first one in June-July is called Tsuyu by the Baiu Zensen, and the second one in Sep-Oct called Akisame by the Akisame Zensen. Tsuyu is usually identified more clearly than Akisame (this year reversed). Akisame could be disrupted by typhoons.

And it is true that typhoon usually costs you a day or so. I could say typhoon is similar to cherry blossom, Sakura. We could see it up to a week, but the true peak lasts only a day or so. Tsuyu and Akisame are to Autumn foliage, Koyo. They could be seen up to a month, but the peak is just a week.

Here are statistics for more. Try a translator on the web. The mean number of typhoons landing in Japan is 2.7 in June-Oct.

The 30-year average daily weather. You should aware that there are significant changes among areas.
https://www.benricho.org/weather_ratio/

To identify Tsuyu. Stable sunny summer days after mid-July.
Tokyo May https://www.benricho.org/weather_ratio/13_05.html
Tokyo June https://www.benricho.org/weather_ratio/13_06.html
Tokyo July https://www.benricho.org/weather_ratio/13_07.html

For Akisame. Stable sunny autumn days after mid-Oct.
Tokyo Sep https://www.benricho.org/weather_ratio/13_09.html
Tokyo Oct https://www.benricho.org/weather_ratio/13_10.html
Tokyo Nov https://www.benricho.org/weather_ratio/13_11.html

This is another proof for Akisame. September Rain: One of the famous song in Japan. "September rain, rain..."

Overall, the best two months for Japan for cycling would be two months before Tsuyu starts, Apr and May, for a direction from the south to the north.

To begin with, a year like this in which Tokyo suffered rain every single day on August had been unthinkable up until now. And now, the whole Kanto region (or at least here in Yokohama) is suffering rain non-stop. I think it has been raining for weeks with the exception of Oct 18th.

In short, you can't predict weather any more. I don't know if it's caused by global warming or what, but it is a fact that we can't predict sunshine. If you're a traveler, you might have already noticed that about Vietnam.

The interesting thing is that October 10th is always sunny and calm.

You'll loose no days; you 'll have ample warning and time to get away, typhoon will never catch you.

lol Tokyo suffered rain every single day on August I thought it was only 22 days, and it was sunny and hot for many days. Five minutes of rain in the afternoon didn't make Tokyo unpleasant.

And this morning I have sun streaming into my office and other than rain yesterday and messed up trains this morning, the typhoon passed by pretty quietly.
