English Guides at Odawara Castle? 2017/11/6 10:43
When we visited Himeji castle a number of years ago, we were pleasantly surprised to find volunteer English speaking guides waiting just outside the castle entrance. They would then escort you through the castle and provide commentary about the building, the various periods through which it was occupied and answer any questions you may have.

I am wondering if there is a similar opportunity at Odawara castle. We are visiting in January.

Cheers

There may be some but I don't remember seeing any. Odawara castle is much smaller and less of a tourist destination than Himeji. I still really enjoyed visiting though.

On my visit to Hakone, I was recommended a site sharing experiences in the area. https://www.entaro.co There were some interesting things to do, but we decided on a short 3 hour tour of the castle and area. Our host was a bilingual local and picked us up from Odawara Station. We were really happy with the information, insight, and stories about the castle, history, and surrounding city. The colorful commentary was a great way to "feel" our time in Japan. I recommend the tour and would think that their other experiences would be just as enjoyable.

Short answer, no.

It is a good and interesting castle, and has some nice history, but it is difficult to get that information from the displays in the castle itself. (Like why the Government tore it down and sold off the materials, and they didn't do the same at Himeji.) Plus, most of the displays inside are in Japanese so getting the full benefit of the place is a little tricky, but it is still a good place to visit IMO.
