How long to do chichibu pilgrimage by car 2017/11/9 03:48
I was thinking of arriving in chichibu on 17th December by 9am as I assume temples open by that time.

I was thinking of leaving chichibu by 5pm on 18th and then go to kumano by train ths evening

Is it feasible to do it by then or should I leave for kumano On 19th by 5pm. I read most temples are in the city and 2/3 are in the sticks so to speak

Also what can I do in chichibu in the evenings. I donft drink but I can go into a bar

Thank you

The answer depends, I guess, somewhat on the scope of your visit to Chichibu. I.e. do you want to do the 34 temple pilgrimage because of a religious reason and thus absolutely want to visit all of them? Or is it more about sightseeing?

If the second is true, for 34 temples (plus once you are in Chichibu, you will also want to see the famous shrine) in 2 days @ 7 h hardcore sightseeing every day makes 2.5 temples per each single hour, so about 25 min for each temple, including the time you need for transportation, so probably leaving you an average of about 10 min to actually see each temple. Apart from being very hectic, I think all the temples will just mix in your head to one big conglomerate as you don't have time to enjoy the particularities of none of them.

What I would do, is to do the ones farther away (30 - 34) by car, maybe not all of them, just pick 2. The ones in the city (probably not all, but do visit the shrine!) , I would do by foot, and I would also do a few farther away by foot, to enjoy the countryside around. I know, December, but still, unless it is raining/snowing, walking should be enjoyable.

I personally did 25 - 29 by walking, which was very enjoyable and took essentially a day, doing it in a relaxed way. There is a lunch option at temple 28 plus an other very peculiar attraction to visit.

On the previous day I had done 13 - 22 (actually 22 - 13) by walking. While the ones in town are nice to walk to, 20 - 22 were not specially nice to walk to, because of the traffic.

I haven't done 1 - 5, but I have been riding through that valley by bicycle some time ago, and think to remember that traffic there was not so bad, so walking should be enjoyable.

As you have a car, you can drive up to one and then visit a few that are closeby walking.

Here a useful map for the location:

There is also a Chichibu pilgrimage enthusiast on this forum. If you search for previous Q&As about Chichibu, he/she gave further ideas.

Your second question, what to do in the evenings in Chichibu: onsen? dinner? resting for the next day? Probably there are also some bars with Karaoke around town, if that's for you. (Chichibu is not an onsen destination, but after a day out in the cold either walking or driving, some hot soak should be enjoyable and there are at least 2 onsen options available).

Enjoy your trip to Japan!

I walked most of the Chichibu the pilgrimage in 3 days, did the last 4 temples on a fourth day by car. Most temples are outside of Chichibu centre but still in urban areas, the last nine are out of the way. My guess would be that it would take you two days by car to cover the lot of them as getting the calligraphy for the stamp book, reciting the Hearth Sutra, it does take time.

If you have an Android device, check out the free app that I made after I wished I had it when I walked the pilgrimage: http://monochrome.me.uk/news/chichibu-pilgrimage-app-for-android/

If you have more questions, reach out.

These are the ones that I found most exceptional, start off with as many temples as you can in and closely around Chichibu and make sure you include these as well:

Temple 26 to visit Iwaidou: http://monochrome.me.uk/blog/iwaidou-hidden-kannon-hall/
Temple 30: http://monochrome.me.uk/blog/temple-30-34-kannon-temple-pilgrimage/
Temple 20: http://monochrome.me.uk/blog/temple-20-of-the-chichibu-pilgrimage-iwan...
Temple 32: http://monochrome.me.uk/blog/temple-32-hosho-ji-chichibu/
Temple 31: http://monochrome.me.uk/blog/kannon-hall-temple-31-chichibu/
Temple 28: http://monochrome.me.uk/news/chichibu-34-kannon-temples-pilgrimage-day...

BTW, there is also a famous Temple Stay around Chichibu, in case you're looking for a suggestion on what to do: http://monochrome.me.uk/taiyoji/shukubo_en.html

Re: How long to do chichibu pilgrimage by car 2017/11/11 01:33
You should be able to do all 34 Temples by car in three days. I have done the entire pilgrimage in five days. I walked most of the pilgrimage. Temples 31-34 are fairly distant, and I did those by bus. Even if you take a twenty minutes at each Temple, and spend 10 minutes driving between Temples, You should have from 9:00AM till 4:00PM each day to visit Temples. You should try to get 13-14 Temples on the first two days, and leave extra time on the final day for the extra drive time between Temples.

Just some notes: You can get the scroll and other pilgrimage items at Temples 1 and 12. Temple 12 is in town, and I purchased my scroll there. I don't remember getting the Stamp and Calligraphy at Temple 2. I believe that you just visit Temple 2, and then get Temples 2 & 3 stamps at Temple 3. I also remember buying and eating food at only two or three of the Temples, not too many of them will have food. I also remember one of the Temples had a festival that day, and I stayed longer there.

Good Luck in planning your trip.

As forgoing in order, I didn't. I don't think many people do. Doing so will cause you to re-trace your path around Temples 6-9, if I remember correctly. I ended up finishing my pilgrimage at Temple 31, which has a large bell that can be rung for a 100 yen donation. I seemed like a good finish to the pilgrimage, so I did it.

Re: How long to do chichibu pilgrimage by car 2017/11/11 04:24
There is no importance to the order although Temple #1 does have sort of a shop to get the nokyocho ([o) -- which is the little book to collect the temple stamps -- or the traditional pilgrimage clothing, stick or hat. All of these are optional, but I still enjoy looking through my completed nokyocho from time to time.

The inscription for Temple #2 is down the mountain at Komyo-ji temple on the way to Temple #3, see my Android companion app for these kind of details: http://monochrome.me.uk/news/chichibu-pilgrimage-app-for-android/
