I have a working visa but had to quit my job 2017/12/16 04:19
I moved to Japan a few months ago under a work visa sponsored by a company here. I had to quit my job a few days ago for reasons I don't want to get into. My residence card is valid until August so I thought I could remain here until then as long as I could pay my bills, but I was told that I need to inform immigration that I quit my job within 2 weeks and that I then have 3 months to find another job or my work visa will be cancelled and I'll have to leave the country.

How accurate is that information? Also, what kind of job qualifies to stop the visa from being cancelled? Do I have to work for a company or do I just need to have any sort of income? Would private English lessons with students found through a website like hello-sensei qualify as working?

Thanks in advance!

"Work visa" does not exist. What is your status?

Yes it is true that both your (former) employer and you have the obligation to inform immigration within 2 weeks. You can tell them that you left your company, and that you are looking for a job in the same category (one that falls into the same "resident status" as Firas mentioned). You will probably get a "few months" to find a new job (yes, you need an employer), and then you can stay on with that resident status.

I have not heard of a case where the remaining resident status got revoked, but that's what immigration authorities can/might do.

And after you have found a new job, you must report that too.

Then no, "freelance" work is not acceptable. Your job must be "based on a contract entered into with a public or private organization in Japan."
