Narita Airport to Mt Fuji 2018/1/7 15:33
Hi all,

I'm looking to travel from Narita International Airport to either Hakone or Fuji Five Lakes. My flight lands in Narita at around 3:45 PM on March 9. How long will getting my baggage and going through customs take?

If I go to Hakone, I plan on using my JR Pass to get from Narita Airport to Odawara, then get a Hakone Free pass to get from Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto. Assuming I leave the airport at around 6, I presume to arrive at Hakone-Yumoto around 8:30? Will there be transportation available at such a late time to get to my onsen ryokan?

If I go to Fuji Five Lakes, I plan on taking the Limited Express Train Skyliner from Narita Airport to Nippori, take the JR Yamanote Line from Nippori to Shinjuku, the Limited Express Train Super Azusa from Shinjuku to Otsuki, and the Private Railway from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko. (This transportation seems extreme...wondering if there is a less hectic travel option?) Assuming I leave the airport at around 6, I will arrive at Kawaguchiko around 9:45. Will there be transportation available at such a late time to get to my hotel?

---
Also, does anyone know if I will be able to see cherry/plum blossoms at this time? I plan to only see Mt. Fuji for one day and the rest of the days will be in Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo (unless you have other recommendations).

Thanks so much for your help!

If you reach Hakone-yumoto around 8:30, assume that the town would be very quiet and things closed by then. Many ryokan would have closed their kitchen by then. So plan for your meal. Transportation to Hakone-yumoto would be no problem.

To go to Fuji Five Lakes, you can also go Narita airport - Tokyo station - Shinjuku, all via JR. You don't have to choose Skyliner. But the change to another railway from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko is inevitable. There should be some taxis around the station (if you need one). Or choose a hotel that is not far from the station.

You failed to mention which hotel, so your question is answerable.

but either if the hotels shuttle bus has ceased daily operation or the local buses have also. There is taxis to get you to where you need to go.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies! Yes, I haven't decided where I will be staying yet. But I think I will look for ryokans around the Hakone Open Air Museum or the Lake Kawaguchiko area. Will there be taxis waiting at the bus stops?

I've actually been researching things to do in the Fuji Five Lakes area. I won't be renting a car so I'm worried about the traveling. I plan to go to the Ice and Wind Caves and visit the Fujiyoshida Sengen Shrine as well as the Chureito Pagoda. Will it be difficult to travel from Lake Kawaguchiko to these areas? Also, if anyone has any other recommendations on what to do/see, it would be greatly appreciated!

1)
If the flight scheduled on time, you can leave before 17:00, (castom : under 60min usual)
but if over one hour late or later, entering evening rush hour of the airport,
so you will be Hakone later night, maybe it is not good. (just you can reach until midnight)

Book hotel(?) in Tokyo(mid town, major ward Shinjuku or around) woud be better.
Hakone is not so far by train or ExpWay bus.

2)
How many days travel? if under 2 weeks, the answer is No.
If have a super good luck, you may find Kawazu Zakura.
(earlier blooming species of cherry blossom)

3)

If you have a IDP, car rent is the best, if not solo.

Re: Narita Airport to around Mount Fuji 2018/1/8 22:21
It sounds better to use another nickname when you later register yourself here on this website; you will not be "1st time" traveler after this planned journey.

from Narita International Airport to either Hakone or Fuji Five Lakes.
the rest of the days will be in Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo

To the summit of Mount Fuji, Lake Kawaguchiko is closer than Hakone Ashinoyu.
When you travel to Kyoto or Osaka, Hakone is more easily accessible as a side trip than Fuji Five Lakes.

You have at least two practical options.
(A) You will stay first in Tokyo, make a round trip to (around) Lake Kawaguchiko then go from Tokyo to Kyoto and Osaka.
(B) You will stay first in Hakone, go to Kyoto and Osaka then get back to Tokyo.

Even if you make it that night, you will not have time to do anything when you arrive. Adding a 3+ hour journey on top of a long air travel day will not be pleasant. I would stay near Shinjuku station and head out first thing in the morning instead. Then you can either ride the bus to Kawaguchiko or buy a full Hakone pass and ride all the way to Hakone. Glancing at the schedules, you can get to either by 8:30 AM, so early enough to do anything you were planning for that day.

Hi all,

Thank you all for the wonderful advice! I plan to stay at the Hilton near the Narita Airport and head to Fuji View Hotel the next morning. Anyone know how to get from the Hilton by the Narita Airport to the Shinjuku Station?

Why didn't you...

(change date and time of dep or as arr)

If on weekday and too early morning dep will get caught up in morning rush. (not fr Narita)
Shinjuku Station is the station used by the world's top commuter passengers.
The average number of users per day is "2 million" people.
This is not a joke, and even NOT "20 thousand".
(Although it is the total of multiple routes and mor to mid-night)

So, if flight won't be so serious delayed, should move to more convenient "mid Tokyo".

Narita Airport Hilton runs a free shuttle bus. Return to the airport in the morning (fresh) and start from there.
