Platform 3 to Platform 1 Kanazawa Station 2018/1/8 15:22
I am travelling on a shinkansen from Wakuraonsen to Kanazawa, arriving on platform 3 at 9:44am, I need to make the shinkansen to Nagoya which departs on platform 1 at 9:48am. I am not sure if I can make it in time. I also cannot find a platform map showing how far apart the stations are.

Please let me know if it is possible to make it in 4 minutes.

Thanks for your help!

It is possible but very very tight. As they are both Shinkansen platforms you should be able to make it. Just make sure you are ready to get off as soon as the train stops.

None of these trains are Shinkansen. They are both normal JR trains, express trains. This makes changing your train actually easier, as you wonft need to go through specific ticket gates at Kanazawa.
Just be prepared to get off, go to the stairs and over to the other track.
This train is offered as a connection by Japanese rail connection webpage, so it is doable. Just donft loose time buying drinks or waiting for an elevator.

Enjoy your trip to Japan!

Re: From Wakuraonsen via Kanazawa to Nagoya 2018/1/8 21:35
It is not platforms but tracks where trains arrive and depart.

Please let me know if it is possible to make it in 4 minutes.

You may not have full 4 minutes.
It can be a very tight connection, I should say.

The former train may arrive at 9:44:45, in which case its doors may get fully opened at 9:44:55.
You have to go down from the platform either to the pathway (on the mezzanine) or to the concourse (on the 1st floor) then go up to the other platform.
In a case where the scheduled departure time of the latter train is 9:48:00, its doors may begin to close at 9:47:45.

Now you plan to get off Limited Express Noto Kagaribi 4 (arriving at 9:44 at Track 3) and catch Limited Express Shirasagi 6 (departing at 9:48 at Track 1), which is scheduled to arrive to Nagoya at 12:48 at Track 4.

From Kanazawa you alternatively can
take Limited Express Thunderbird 16
(bound for Osaka, departing at 9:53 at Track 2) until Kyoto
(arriving at 12:09 at Track 7)
then change to Shinkansen Hikari 520
(bound for Tokyo, departing at 12:32 at Track 12),
which is scheduled to arrive to Nagoya at 13:25 at Track 14.
In the transfer at Kyoto to Shinkansen, you pass through Shinkansen Central | East Transfer gate.

Regarding a JR station listed below, a map in English is available on the website(s) of JR-West and/or JR-Central.

@Omotenashi Re your point on it being "Tracks" not "Platforms" That depends on where you are from. In the UK (& I think Aus & NZ) we always talk of Platforms whereas the US refers to Tracks. No criticism intended, just an observation.

Re: Platform 3 to Platform 1 Kanazawa Station 2018/1/9 10:10
At Kanazawa, for that train change, you do need to go down, across one and back up. Without luggage do-able. With luggage or any delay for the arriving train, I personally would not include that in my schedule.
For a trip only 5 minutes longer, you could take the Thunderbird at 9:53 to Kyoto and have 9 minutes to transfer (and then up to Nagoya) rather than the tight 4 minutes. But if you are set on the Shirasagi, then a dash between platforms is required.
