I need to travel from takayama to tokyo in feb 2018. May i know what is the best and shortest way to travel? Appreciate your kind advice. Thank you.

If you're just worried about speed, the fastest way is a Hida to Nagoya and then the Nozomi from Nagoya to Tokyo. The Nozomi is not covered by a rail pass.

The shortest route is a highway bus.
The quickest route is train via Nagoya.

Highway bus saves about 9,000 yen and only takes about 1 hour longer. (From Shinjuku station)
If you have a train pass, then train is faster and included. But if paying regular fare, I would definitely save the money and take the bus. Plus the bus is direct and train has 1-2 transfers.
