Kanazawa to Takayama to Kyoto 2018/1/13 02:03
We will have a 7 days JR pass and travel the Bullet train From Tokyo to Kanazawa HS.
Advise needed on a Bus Trip from Kanazawa to Tokoyama with a stop at Shirakawa etc, realizing the JR pass does not cover this leg, where to reserve tickets and best journey advised to see.
The Journey from Tokoyama to Kyoto is covered by JR pass but is it a fast train?
Finally any input on the itinerary so far?

If you are coming from Tokyo first. The arrive at Takayama first. the bus to Shirakawago, then bus to Kanazawa. Thunderbird limited express from Kanazawa to Kyoto.

The buses need to be paid separately (as they are not covered by JR pass) and you buy the tickets at the bus travel center.

Got it!
What if I did not Buy the 7 days JR pass and instead Purchased the 5 Day JR West Kauai Pass,
Would that work better, or still stick to 7 days Pass.?
I note you advise Separate Bus Tickets from Tokoyama to Shirakawa-go and then from there to Kanazawa.
Will a Direct Bus from Tokoyama to Kanazawa Not allow us enough time to visit Shirakawa?

Toyama...

IF you are getting off the bus at Shirakawago, then it wouldn't be a direct bus from Toyama to Kanazawa.

But anyway, you mentioned Takayama in your question/thread title. So if you want confirm the inconsistencies itinerary, then better advice may be give.

JR West passes don't cover trains to/from Tokyo.

by Tokoyama you mean Toyama or Takayama?
Takayama-Shirakawago-Kanazawa is by Nouhi bus. Timetable is in google available. There is several buses, you can schedule so have 2-3 hours in Shirakawago. Rate is 4320 yen.
In Kanazawa we did not get tickets first time, it is quite popular trip. Think same could be in Takayama, so buy tickets early.

[Bus route]

Takayama-Shirakawago-Kanazawa is by Nouhi bus.

This bus line is co-operated by Nohi Bus and Hokutetsu [Hokuriku Railroad].
You might see a Hokutetsu logo on the body of your first bus, which departs from Takayama Nohi Bus Center (at Bus Stop No. 4).

Timetable is in google available.

The bus timetables are available on this Japan Guide website.
https://www.japan-guide.com/bus/shirakawago.html

In a bus which runs only between Takayama and Shirakawa-go, you cannot reserve your ride, i.e. seats are secured on a first-come, first-served basis.

In a bus which runs for the section Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa, you need to reserve your ride, even just for the section Takayama -- Shirakawa-go.

Except when you plan to travel with Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass,
an adult among you travelers who holds
a valid credit card of either American Express, JCB, MasterCard or VISA
can make the reservation through Japan Bus Online website,
from the day one month prior to the boarding date.

Correction: typo 2018/1/23 05:40
NOT: the section Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa
BUT: the section Shirakawa-go -- Kanazawa

Re: Tokyo - Shirakawa-go + Kanazawa - Kyoto (2) 2018/1/23 05:47
[Tickets and traveling cost]

A traveling cost shown in this response is that for one adult passenger.

The mentioned tourist pass (14000 yen, 5 days), which can cover
that non-JR bus route Takayama -- Shirakawa-go -- Kanazawa
and the JR railway route
Nagoya -- Takayama -- Inotani -- Toyama -- Kanazawa -- Tsuruga -- Kyoto -- Shin-Osaka -- Kansai-airport,
sounds good for your legs beyond Nagoya via Kanazawa for Kyoto and Osaka,
on the condition that you complete them within 5 calendar days.

- Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass
http://touristpass.jp/en/takayama_hokuriku/
: This pass is issued jointly by JR Central and JR West.

Please collate, using a reliable source, the spelling of Japanese names (for places, facilities, etc.).
They may be misspelled while they are cited (repeatedly) in a non-Japanese language.

I cannot identify the JR-West rail pass which you are asking about.
http://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/
http://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/

When in the next fall will you travel?
Will you visit any site in Takayama City?
(Maybe you plan to watch the Takayama autumn festival?)

As long as you travel between Takayama and Kanazawa,
a JR-West rail pass sounds not best suitable.

The (5-day) JR-West Kansai WIDE Area Pass (9000 yen)
does not cover the section Inotani -- Toyama -- Kanazawa -- Tsuruga in Hokuriku.

The section Nagoya -- Takayama -- Inotani is not covered any JR West rail pass;
this section is operated not by JR West but by JR Central.

Even when you choose
the (7-day) JR-West Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass
(15000 yen, covering that Hokuriku section),
you pay more
on your JR regular tickets to go beyond Nagoya until Inotani
and for your two non-JR bus rides (4320 yen),
compared to when you make the combination
of JR regular tickets until Nagoya and the tourist pass (14000 yen).

An Exchange Order for this tourist pass
is sold at 14000 yen (outside Japan).
The JR regular cost for an adult passenger to travel
by Shinkansen from Tokyo or Shinagawa to Nagoya
is up to 11290 yen
(6260 yen as the basic fare, 4100 to 5030 yen as the Shinkansen surcharge).
The total cost to make this combination is about 25000 yen.

An Exchange Order for the 7-day (Ordinary-Class) Japan Rail Pass
is sold at 29110 yen (outside Japan).
When you travel with this pass,
you pay 4320 yen separately for your two non-JR bus rides.
The total cost is about 33000 yen.

So, to make a long story short,
unless you make also other trips (mainly by JR) within the 7 calendar days
which is enough to fill the gap in the costs on these two options,
it sounds better cost-wise to take the former option,
i.e. the combination of JR regular tickets and the tourist pass.
A possible demerit is that you cannot reserve your bus rides online, because this tourist pass should exempt you from the bus fees.

Re: Kanazawa to Takayama to Kyoto 2018/1/23 05:51
What is being asked is , a Day Trip originating at Kanazawa, going to Takayama and return to Kanazawa, but being able to stop for an hour or so a Shirakwago. Thanks

Clarification 2018/1/23 06:01
It sounds better to say: because this tourist pass covers the bus route, exempting you from paying separately the bus fees.
Also, "by" is missing after "covered" and before "any JR West rail pass" in my description about the JR-Central section Nagoya -- Takayama -- Inotani.

Re: your Shirakawa-go and Takayama trip(s) 2018/1/23 06:42
a Day Trip originating at Kanazawa, going to Takayama and return to Kanazawa, but being able to stop for an hour or so a Shirakwago.

That sounds too tight!

As hakata14 points out, you can travel from Tokyo via Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa to Kyoto (, and you say you got it).
Why would you spend about 4 and a half hours on bus rides to make such a round trip needlessly?
(Kanazawa and Takayama are about 125 kilometers apart on the bus route.)

It might be possible, when you travel fast, to go around the Ogimachi district of Shirakawa-go within one or two hours.
Even so, as long as you plan to go to and back from Takayama within one day, I suppose you cannot have much time for sightseeing there.

What would you do in Takayama?

Re: Kanazawa to Takayama to Kyoto 2018/1/24 06:10
Finally, this is how I have arranged, its been a challenge and all well-meaning folks have had their input.my unfamiliarity to the spellings has also contributed to the confusion.
We arrive Tokyo, stay 3 days the Catch a Shinkansen and 2.5hrs later are in Kanazawa, where we spend a day sightseeing. We then Bus (booked a month before ) from Kanazawa to Takayama, stopping at Shirakawa-go ( we need 2 separate tickets for the stop and separate leg)
From Tokoyama ( we appreciate ecology) we catch the LTD /Shinkansen to Nagoya and Kyoto.
We stop in Kyoto for 3 days then on to Hiroshima for 2 days and Back to Osaka for 3 days before flying back.We have all the hotels booked and will Buy the 7 Days JR Pass, 3 months before.
Comments, criticism and well-meaning advice appreciated.
Finally, Thank you, every one of you, for your input
