I'm planning to visit Nikko on one of the coming weekends. My question is which places in Nikko should I visit? Between a day trip or 2 days 1 night trip which is the better option?

If you can stay for the night youfll be able to see more and enjoy more.
Regarding what to see, did you have a look at the Nikko information on this webpage of in a guide book?
If you stay there overnight you might want to add some time in an onsen.

Welcome to Nikko.You can Buy World Heritage pass,JR Tokyo wide pass,Tobu Bus Free pass(2 Day pass).
Lake chuzenji is worth to visit.Then consider chuzenji Free pass.Here I love Kosugi Hoan Museum of Art,
Shin Kyo Bridge,Rinno ji Temple,Tosho gu Temples, Tosho gu Museum of Art ,Tamozawa imperial villa etc.
