Best way to get to Okuhida-Takayama-Matsumoto

Hi,

We want to travel to Takayama from Matsumoto but spend 1 night in Okuhida Onsen region before travelling onwards. Is it possible to buy the round trip ticket to Takayama from Matsumoto, and hop off at Hirayu Onsen, and purchase the Takayama & Shin-Hotaka Two-Day Open Ticket to get to Takayama afterwards.

Would that be the best way to travel the area?
