Shimbara and Unzen in January

Hi I'm just finalising plans for a trip next January. We are planning a little over 1 week in Kyushu. I want to vist Kagoshima, Nagasaki and Fukuoka. I am thinking of also visiting the Shimabara peninsula, to see the disaster museum, buried houses and Mt Unzen hells.
It would require a bit of a detour and an overnight stay in the area and I'm wondering whether it will be worth it in mid January. Will it be very cold and quiet in this area?
I'm wondering whether I would be better off saving this for another time of year and maybe adding on a day in either Fukuoka, for a day trip, or maybe in Kagoshima to go to Chiran.
I'd love to hear from people who have visited these areas. Note we are travelling by public transport only. Thanks in advance!

I would save it for another time. Shimabara has awesome beaches and sea view. Why waste them going in the middle of winter? Save Shimabara for another time of the year.

Thank you for your response. Would you add a day to Kagoshima for Chiran or add a day to Fukuoka instead?

You could add either. But without knowing how many days you have at Fukuoka and Kagoshima, and what and where you plan to visit. You secondary question in unanswerable.

Yes of course - sorry. At the moment I have allotted 1 full day and 1 half day to Kagoshima, and 3 full days in Fukuoka.
