Can You Buy the JR Pass in Japan from April? 2018/2/17 08:47
Does anyone have any info on whether the 'trial period' of selling the full JR Pass in Japan will be extended beyond this March? I can't find anyone at JR to contact regarding this.

There doesn't seem to be any legit reason to not make the sale permanent, especially since you can get almost any regional pass once in Japan already, and the Olympics are going to be in Japan in a couple years.
You'd think JR would have decided about this with just 6 weeks left of the trial.

Anyone heard anything?

The material published by JR indicates the trial will end 31/3/2018. There is no indication that there will be an extension (similar to when JREast changed some of their passes and discount tickets a while back).

My discussions with JR staff indicate they do a steady number of in-Japan sales, but if this is enough to make it worthwhile is something the accountants might still be assessing. Not all exchange offices sell the pass.

In any event, buying before you arrive is hardly difficult. People buy airline tickets and hotels in advance, why not a rail pass - only takes a few minutes to do, and is cheaper.
