Dewa Sanzan in May? 2018/2/26 03:07
good morning,
my wife and I did Kumano Kobo last year. Looking for the same(more or less) experience we thought at dewa sanzan.
I saw that two temples are closed for snow for a long time, however we should like to try all the three
temples in the middle of May .Is it possible?
I will appreciate your opinion.
best regards

Below I summarize what can be found on separate pages:

Haguro-san: open year around.
Gas-san: open July to late September
Yudono-san: open May to October (may be closed longer due to snow situation)

So, no, you will not be able to visit all of them in May. Particularly, Gas-san is still covered under a thick layer of snow.

Note that they are considered shrines rather than temples.

Hi!
As my husband and I also plan to visit this area in mid May, I posted this same question on another board. From what I was told, only Hagurosan will be accessible via public transport in May. We knew Gassan would be inaccessible due to snow, but we'd hoped to visit Yudonosan. Unfortunately, it seems that the bus that used to run between Tsuruoka and Yudonosan throughout the year has been discontinued, and the only way to reach Yudonosan is by car. Taxi, as you might imagine, is quite expensive.

hmm, i could be wrong, cause my japanese is very bad, but i think the bus is not discontinued, it is just no longer direct from the tsuruoka station. you just have to go over Haguro summit as it seems.

at least on the webpage the buses are still listed:

Oh, I hope that is the case.

I was told both on another board and by the owner of a ryokan at Hagurosan that the bus only operates from June to October, and maybe on weekends. About a month ago they said that they're not sure if extra buses will be operating this year, but that they definitely won't run in May

But maybe things have changed. It would be great if we could get there in May!

I'm not sure about whether it runs in May but I could have sworn people on this Forum were discussing at some point the bus only running on week ends now. I book marked the thread because I want to make it to Yudono-san and Gas-san at some point.

I went to Haguro-san in late April and then took the bus from Tsuroka to Yamagata. The route through the mountains had considerable amounts of snow, so I understand why Gassan and Yudono-san are closed. I could have sworn though that April is the start of Gas-san's ski season so maybe you could ski there?

The bus situation for Yudono for 2018 has not been published according to my understanding. The situation for 2017 is explained here:

I personally expect it to be the same as 2017. Just a feeling.
