How many? Are they well behaved? Currently, many bears are being killed in Akita to a degree that some people fear they may become extinct.

As a traveler you should not worry about them especially if you do not plan to do hiking. Most conflicts between bears and humans involve farmers or people collecting mushrooms or mountain vegetables. Accidents involving tourists are very rare.

If you go hiking, it is better to make some noise in order to avoid a surprise encounter.

you shouldnt take more bears than fit in your car. else you will be fine.

here also a hint a japanese once gave me:
* the best ward against bears is to always take children with you:
** children make make constant noises, that will scare bears away, so bears are likely not to even approach you.
** and even if - you can run faster away than the children, so bear will attack them first, which gives you enough time to escape.

:-)
happy trip to akita!
