How to say "one of the most X" in Japanese? 2018/2/26 18:44
Hello guys,

I am trying to figure out how to say "one of the most" in Japanese.
So for example, let's say that I want to say this sentence in Japanese "According to statistical data, Japan has one of the lowest crime rate in the world." Or something similar like "Japan is known as one of the safest countries in the world." Would it be something like this?

統計的データから見られることは日本が一つの一番低い犯罪率があります。

日本は世界の中で一つの一番安全な国です。

To my knowledge, these sentences sound/feel somewhat unnatural. Pretty sure they are wrong.
Please correct and explain to me the right way to say them.

Thanks. :D

use the "no naka de"-grammar
http://japanesetest4you.com/flashcard/learn-jlpt-n4-grammar-の中で-no-naka-de/

e.g. sekai no naka de nihon wa xxx desu
= From all in the world Japan is most / least xxx.

統計データを見ると、日本が世界で最も犯罪率が低い国の1つであることがわかります。
From statistical data, you can tell Japan is one of the countries with the lowest crime rate in the world.

日本は、世界各国の中で最も安全な国の1つとして知られています。
Japan is known as one of the safest countries among countries of the world.

"...(no naka) de" = "in ....," or "among (comparing individual countries)" is fine, but you left out the "most..." part. This 最も (mottomo) is the way to express "the most...

Hello  Im japanese.

I think AK's answers is better.
(“mottomo” ≒ "most")
Only “no naka de‘’ means merely “in” or “among”.

“mottomo 〈A〉 no hitotsu” is the best way to express "one of the most 〈A〉".

統計によると、日本は世界で最も犯罪率の低い国の一つだ。
According to statistical data, Japan has one of the lowest crime rate in the world.

⇨最も〈犯罪率 の 低い 国 〉の 一つ
→mottomo 〈hanzairitsu no hikui kuni〉no hitosu

日本は世界で最も安全な国の一つとして知られている。
Japan is known as one of the safest countries in the world.

⇨最も 〈安全な 国〉 の 一つ
→mottomo〈anzen na kuni〉no hitotsu

These sound natural.
Sorry for my poor English.

Thanks a lot for the explanation, guys!

By the way, would this have the same meaning?

日本は世界有数の安全な国だと言われている。
日本は世界有数の低い銃関連死亡がある国だ。

This 世界有数の says "one of the most prominent/famous... of/in the world," but because this already has the meaning of "most prominent/famous" in it, the word it describes tends to be a simple noun, rather than an adjective + noun.

What I mean is that you can say (excuse me for the dumb examples):
日本は世界有数の観光国だ。(Japan is one of the most prominent tourism nations in the world.)
京都は世界有数の観光地だ。(Kyoto is one the most prominent sightseeing spots in the world.)
ゴッホは世界有数の画家だ。(Van Gogh is one of the most prominent painters.)

But saying 世界有数の安全な国だ (adjective + noun) sounds clumsy and not used.
