Japan has lots of nice places.
November 23rd to December 4th, eh? Japan will be getting cold then. The north (Hokkaido and Tohoku) and central Japan (the Japan Alps) especially so. Unless you like cold weather, you might consider traveling more in the southern/western parts of Japan, especially in Kyushu.

Kyoto should be in peak fall colours then. It's amazing - but the crowds are also amazingly large....

This period is the best autumn foliage season in Kyoto, which is the most popular touristic spots and the most popular autumn foliage spots in Japan. As a result, normal hotel tend to be very expensive. Are you OK with the dormitory or the capsule room? If you need ensuite bathroom, the lowest fare should be around 20000 yen per night in Kyoto. However, there seems to be many new accommodations in Kyoto which might be affordable, so you might better search and find what you want.

You can also try Nara for accomodation. It's a nice atmospheric place to visit, if smaller then Kyoto. I do suspect it's also busy during autumn season, though, so book early.

This site is pretty handy for planning a trip, as you can see suggested daytrips from Osaka and Kyoto as well on the page of the city, so you can find what's nearby. Just look around a little for whatever sparks your interest.
