Sapporo Snow Festival - Opening ceremony

Hi all, since deciding recently that I was going to make the trip to Sapporo in Feb 2019 I've had my eye on the snow festival but there seems to be one question I can't seem to answer:
'Is it worth being there for the opening and closing ceremonies?'
I've seen schedules online but none go into detail of what the opening and closing actually consists of. Any help is greatly appreciated.
