Accommodation around Takayama

We have three nights after Kyoto and before Tsumago so were thinking of staying three nights in Takayama and hiring a car (dropping off car in Nakatsugawa for Magome/Tsumago).

Anyway, my question is most of Takayama is booked out... will we regret staying in a place that's half way between Takayama and Matsumoto? Will we be constantly driving to through Takayama to get to our sightseeing destinations?

When are you going? If it's more than 3 months out you'll find a lot of places don't take bookings and will appear as though they're booked out.
