Tokyo or Kyoto for Sakura? 2018/3/16 04:56
Hello everyone! I leave for my first trip to Japan in two weeks and I'm super excited! Seeing sakura is high on my bucket list, but looking at the full bloom forecast it looks like I'll be arriving just as full bloom is ending in Tokyo (according to some forecasts).

I land the night of March 30th. My plan had been to see some of Tokyo on the 31st but I'm considering using my JR pass to take a day trip to Kyoto instead to see sakura and some of the sights. I am visiting Kyoto later in my trip, but it won't be until the full bloom in Kyoto is over.

I know it is up to preference, but what do you guys think? End of the full bloom in Tokyo, or mid full bloom in Kyoto?

There are many types of Sakuas.
Somei Yoshino is the most popular one.
It seems that Somei Yoshino will be bloom earlier than the predicted day.

If you lose the time of that, you can see other types as written here.
It might be one way to see those types.

I saw that post, yes, but it doesn't answer my question about the aesthetics in different cities :)

If I were you I'd completely get out of the cities if you want to experience the cherry blossoms, particularly Tokyo.
Unless you want to "enjoy" them like this:

But if you want the list anyway, try:

The best places are the nice sights the tourist mobs have not yet discovered.
You can see a list of the top rated spots on
http://bit.ly/2Dk5jTR
and you'll quickly notice many are not in the big cities.
For Kyoto, in the city there is Haradani-en just above Kinkakuji - some know it but not all. Outside Kyoto City there is in Yawata City the Sewaridutsumi lane - about 1.4 km of blooming cherry blossoms.

No, you won't be alone there, but you won't be swimming through a tsunami of people either.

Thank you for all the lists! Honestly I want to experience both sakura with the crowds and without. Completely different experinces.
