Transport in tokyo 2018/5/6 03:43
Hi everyone, this is my firt trip to Japan and I am confused with transport. I read all the information here but I still don't know what to do.
I am doing 5 days in Tokyo and 4 days in Kyoto. The only trip outside of Tokyo is Kyoto. Should I buy the JR or the Suica card? Or what else its recommended.
Thank you

A Suica card (or Pasmo, Icoca, etc.) is highly recommended.

As for the long-distance trip to Kyoto: if you make a round trip, then a 7-day Japan Rail Pass comes slightly more expensive than regular shinkansen tickets, however, the price difference may be offset by other train rides covered, e.g. the airport train and some urban JR travel. It is a close call. If you travel just one way between Tokyo and Kyoto (e.g. arrive in Tokyo and fly out of Osaka), then a Japan Rail Pass will not pay off.

If you are on a low budget, you could consider taking overnight buses:

Tokyo to Kyoto return is only JPY26,160 so about JPY3,000 less than the 7-day Japan Rail Pass.

If you use the Japanican discounted ticket then Tokyo to Kyoto return is JPY21000 making it considerably cheaper than the 7 day JR Pass https://www.japanican.com/en/tour/detail/PAS1J02031MKC/
