can someone please tell me what dates are for the 2018 school holidays

It depends on the school. Generally, it's similar for every year for every school.

Do you mean high school or college ?
If you mean the high school, there are three long vacation.
spring vacation is two weeks. summer vacation is one month. winter vacation in two weeks.

I was after actual dates. I am booking a trip and last time i was there it was school hols and found it hard to get accommodation. That was spring am looking at going in October this time

Actual dates are set by each school. If you come from a country where school holiday dates are set nationally by the government, that's not how it works in Japan.

October is not a school holiday season, except that it's a season for school trips. For example, a majority of senior high school students in Greater Tokyo book a whole hotel in Okinawa Mainland around the end of the month.

But are you trying to book accommodation on the spot? If you book now, you will know by the availability whether or not it's going to be crowded or not in your destination.

Anyway, like we wrote, you have to check each school for specific dates, and there are more than 400 senior high schools in Tokyo alone. But it doesn't really make sense to check specific dates in the first place.

There are yearly variations, however, major school holidays have three periods; 40 days centered around Aug 10, 14 days centered around Jan 1, and 14 days centered around Apr 1. Those go well with the description in Wikipedia below.

October is one of the peak seasons for school excursions. Kyoto and Nara would be packed with high school students. Even aside from the school excursions, October is one of peak sightseeing seasons. Many people visit the north and the central highlands to enjoy Autumn leaves.
