in 2002 we stayed at the Ebiya Ryokan a few streets away from the canal about 10-15 minutes walk from the train station. I think the rate was 7,000 en with 2 meals. it was quite nice. Also don't miss the Sushi Street in town. keep looking until you find one that seems right. Ours was fantastic.

The 'sushi street' is as follows http://www.mapion.co.jp/c/f?el=140/59/52.566&scl=70000&uc=1&grp=all&nl=43/11/17.218is the map. Otaru station is the brownish block about 2/3 up and centre. Go to the right following the right following the blue traffic lights down to the old port area. Turn right, you'll find it. It's one of those streets nearest the water that ( by the map ) runs back down towards the next station. Minamiotaru. As for somewhere good to stay. I stayed at the Hilton Otaru with a sea view. They still have vacancies at 15000Y room only. But, hey it's worth a night of sheer luxury. If your budget allows you to make that decision and you are travelling by train get off at Otaruchikko and follow the signs through the shopping mall. About 300 metres to the lobby. All the trains stop at Otaruchikko including a direct service from Sapporo airport.

:)Too bad we got a rather tight budget, so in the end we reserved a room at the youth hostel. Thanks Rod, for the map and detailed information :)

Cheap places to stay for couples?

Hi, Does anyone know of any cheap places to stay for couples. My boyfriend and I are trying to explore as much as we can in Japan, but unfortunately the cheapest place are youth hostels. But they don't allow us to stay in the same room. Does anyone know if Ryokans allow boyfriends/girlfriends/ husband/wife to sleep together in the same room? Does anyone know any cheap places to stay in Otaru, Hokkaido.
