Snow without skiing 2018/6/16 06:09
Hi. My husband and I are visiting Japan in January and would love to stay somewhere snowy for 2 nights of our trip. We donft really care about skiing, just want somewhere beautiful and snowy to stay that is moderately easy to get on public transport.

Does anyone have recommendations of towns or places we could try? I was looking at Nagano but Ifm not sure we would see snow there.

The same question is posted every year.
The range that snow falls is also the same every year,
but some days will be heavy snow by big cold airs coming from Russia.

And, Snow activity is not limited to skiing.

Also, there are no admission ticket systems in most ski sites.
There is also "sled" that adults can play.

In winter Nagano, "Snow monkeys" are waiting for you, there is most famous spot for foreign travelers.

You can also go to Hokkaido or Tohoku for snow. You're not guaranteed snow in January but you have a good chance. I was in Kanazawa in the middle January and for the first two days there was only a dusting of snow on the ground. Then came a storm where flights and trains were cancelled there was so much snow. I could hardly make it to the Lawson a block away to get some food. I also spent one semester break in Nagano when the dorms were closed. There was no snow in the valleys but the mountains were covered. You might have to take a bus up to a high onsen or ski resort even if you don't ski. You take your chances in winter.

I highly recommend Manza Onsen Nisshinkan. Stayed here twice, ought to be snow that time of the year, and best of all Bus package from Shinjuku includes accommodation, onsen, and meals ( last time was @
~11000) would be an offer too hard to refuse.
