Tokyo for Science Nerds?

This summer we'll have a small group of visitors from overseas, all people with PhDs in science (biology, nanotech, chemistry, etc.) and we'll have a few free days in Tokyo. We're looking for science-related things to see and do in the greater Tokyo area that they might find interesting or unique, especially things that wouldn't turn up on the usual list of tourist things to do. There'll be an interpreter, so Japanese language is no problem.

Any suggestions?

It is technically not in Tokyo, but very close and getting there from Tokyo is easy by express train or bus.

I was going to suggest the parasite museum, but someone else has done so.

Some of the places I've been are more kid friendly or general public than PhD level experts, but there are quite a few locations around the city that are quite science focused. I did one of the planetariums last year and in Japanese it was quite interesting, but ok to follow the presentation in rough terms (I knew the topic well enough). The explorer spaces were full of kids though, probably not what you are looking for.

But, I would ask, what kind of science? Biologists might not want what the chemists and physists want - just using sweeping terms rather than the insect guy might be bored when the metals/material gal spends an hour looking at crystaline imputirites.

As a science teacher and a scientist (geologist), have you asked them what specific things may be of interest to them??

One location which is a bit far but might be interesting is the Jogasaki Coast on the Izu Peninsula. It's a pretty scenic location with lots of geological features plus it's always fun to catch the chair lift up a cinder cone volcano....

I'm not a scientist, but when I visited Japan, I specifically wanted to avoid things related to my career. So it was, you know, a vacation! :)

I would probably just plan a regular old Japanese vacation the same as you would if they were accountants.

Some people like the thing they've dedicated their life to.

It's not at all cutting-edge science, but visitors might be interested in Intermediateque, located near Tokyo Station (http://whereintokyo.com/venues/25415.html ). Basically, it's a recreation of a nineteenth-century natural history museum, but seen through the lens of 21st-century sensibilities.

A highly curated, joint project of Tokyo University and the Japanese post office, the museum's impressive collection of hundreds of taxidermied birds and animal skeletons is recontextualized as a "revival of historical heritage within the contemporary urban cityscape."

It's definitely one of my favorite museums in Tokyo.
