Driving: Canadian License with Intl Permit 2018/6/21 16:59
My daughter (a US citizen and Canadian permanent resident), who has a Canadian drivers license, will visit Japan and she hopes to rent a car for a week. She went and got an international drivers permit in Canada.

Is the Japanese translation page in that permit booklet typically enough to satisfy rental car places? Or do they demand a separate "professional" translation from JAF or elsewhere for renting a car?

If someone has had experience with this, please let me know. Thank you.

Canadian license + IDP is all that's required. Even if the IDP doesn't have a Japanese translation, it's still fine.

IDP is a requirement to drive in Japan, I think the same permit is issued for those countries who is part of the 1949 convention, they are all the same, as it's Multilanguage. Although it doesn't have Japanese language if I remember correctly, but still accepted.

Some do, some don't. An IDP is required to have a translation in all official UN languages, but the issuing country can also include additional ones. It seems Canada has decided to include Japanese.

No need JAF translation, that document is necessary for long stay and to switch to a Japanese license.

So, only IDP and Passport enough mostly.

As long as the international permit has the year 1949 on it you're solid.

@firas

I've used the IDP from Hong Kong, been Using Nissan rental twice, it doesn't have Japanese language.

@Ops

As long as you can obtain the IDP, your good to go.

Don't forget to bring the actual license, too. Not just the international.
