Train Travel 2018/6/26 04:57
Hello,

I will travel the first time in Japan and I have to go with the train from Nagoya airport (ngo) to Gifu Hashima station, at 5 july around 12:00 midday, I use a JR rail pass, how is the time table of this route? I saw I have to transfer in Nagoya station 1 time, which train and/ or which platform I have to go at Nagoya station? I already checked the apps ‘hyperdia’ and ‘japan travel’ but I couldn’t search it well there. I’m afraid I take the wrong trains, can anyone give advice which trains/ platforms I have to take?

Track 17 and 16 shown in bold quite clearly for first two options.

NGO Centrair Airport is only serviced by Meitetsu train lines, not JR. Your JR Rail Pass is not good on Meitetsu private lines so you have to pay to get from NGO to Meitetsu Nagoya Station which is right next to JR Nagoya Station.

You have to leave Meitetsu Nagoya Station to get to JR Nagoya Station (look for signs). The Shinkansen lines are at the far west side of the JR station, opposite from Meitetsu Station which is on the far eastern side. Gifu-Hashima is one stop on the HIkari or Kodama Shinkansen toward Osaka (See link above) and takes 10 minutes from Nagoya station.

Don't bother getting reserved seats with your pass; just show it as you enter the platform area and again when you enter the Shinkansen area. Look for "Jiyuseki" or free seats on the side of the car (also marked on the platform but varies by train). You only have a minute or 2 to get on, so if you can't find a "free seat" car, just get on and then walk to find one. You could probably just sit anywhere as you'd be getting off in one stop and the conductor probably wouldn't have left his cabin yet.

See the result of Hyperdia search.

http://www.hyperdia.com/en/cgi/en/search.html?dep_node=CENTRAL%20JAPAN...

If you take Route 1, you will get on Meitetsu Ltd. Exp. starting at 10:47 from NGO and arriving Meitetsu Nagoya station at 11:24 (870 yen, not covered by Japan Rail Pass). If you want to take reserved seat, you must pay additional 360 yen (Myu ticket). Hyperdia tells you will take 5 min from Meitetsu Nagoya station to JR's Shinkansen station (Nagoya), but JR's website states it will take 15 min by foot (no other methods).

From Nagoya to Gifu-Hashima you can use your Japan Rail Pass, and as mentioned above it is only10 min ride so you don't need to make reservation. Note that most Shinkansen trains are the fastest Nozomi which does not stop at Gifu-Hashima (and your Japan Rail Pass does not allow you to take Nozomi). See the electric signage and find correct train. Hikari and Korama runs about twice an hour. Ask the station staff which train to take. He/she will assist you happily.

Hikari 5xx and Kodama 6xx (which is all Kodama) stop at Gifu-Hashima; Hikari 3xx and 4xx (as well as all Nozomi) don't.

http://www.hyperdia.com/cgi/en/intervaltime.html?dep_node=NAGOYA&arv_n...

(Yes, actually some Hikari 4xx in the early morning do, but that's not relevant here.)

If your only trips are from Nagoya to Gifu, the rail pass is not a good option. Are you doing a lot more train travel to make savings? (Some people give friends bad advice that they have to buy the rail pass when it is not a good option.)

Re: Train Travel 2018/6/27 19:08
Hi all,

Thank you very much for the good tips and suggestions, it is realy helpful for me, so if I’m right I just have to go from Nagoya airport (ngo) to Nagoya trainstation (meitetsu) and change there platform to JR Nagoya station, and from there 10 minutes to Hashima station. Thanks so much for help, alone I wouldn’t have figured this out, I installed hyperdia also but when I type ‘Nagoya airport’ and ‘Hashima Gifu’ or ‘Hashima startion’ the app cannot find it. Mayby I put the wrong names? Yes I stay from 5/7 untill 10/7 in Japan, and will travel to some cities like Osaka, Tokyo etc.. using the rail pass.

Another important question is, does anybody know if there are ticket counters with people selling tickets at Hashima station? Or are there only vending machines to buy your ticket?

My flight back to Holland goes at 10/7 morning time, so I think I will have to go back to (ngo) airport at 9/7 late at night. Does anyone have a link from the timetable of Hashima station to Nagoya airport (ngo) around 22:00 or 23:00 at evening 9/7?

I think trains stop driving at night time? Or they drive 24 hours?

Thanks again for the lot of information

The name of the station is Gifu-Hashima, not "Hashima-Gifu" or "Hashima", or anything else. If don't enter the correct name, Hyperdia will not find it.

Yes, there is a ticket counter there.

... and the name of the train station at NGO is Central Japan International Airport.

Personally I think HyperDia is too highly evaluated
(despite its various problematic issues)
by Japan Guide and some regular posters of this forum.

"Nagoya Airport" may refer to another airfield [NKM]
than Chubu Centrair International Airport [NGO].
(And the both are actually outside Nagoya City.)

Centrair Airport and Nagoya City are connected
by Nagoya Railroad (better known as Meitetsu) lines.

to Gifu Hashima station

Where exactly is your first destination?
Is Gifu-Hashima Station really the closest station?

Just near Gifu-Hashima Station of JR Shinkansen
is Shin Hashima Station of Meitetsu,
which you can reach by Meitetsu lines only,
i.e. without Japan Rail Pass.

Are you doing a lot more train travel to make savings?

I too wonder how your whole itinerary is.
Maybe you are going to buy and use a Japan Rail Pass
while actually there is a better option.

You can turn in your Exchange Order for your Japan Rail Pass
at Central Japan Travel Center in Centrair Airport.
The business hours are from 9:00 to 20:30.
https://www.tourist-information-center.jp/chubu/nagoya/en/

Alternatively you can visit JR Tokai Tours Nagoya Office,
which is along the Central Walkway of Nagoya Station
and open from 9:00 to 19:30.

does anybody know if there are ticket counters with people selling tickets at Hashima station?

You can get your Shinkansen reserved-seat tickets
issued together with your Japan Rail Pass.

You had better to pay more attention of station names.

There is no railway station called as Hashima Station.

Around Nagoya Station (of JR) are
Meitetsu Nagoya Station,
Kintetsu-Nagoya Station,
and also Nagoya Station of subway.

In some urban areas in Tokyo,
there are more complicated railway and shopping complexes.

Re: Meitetsu to Shinkansen transfer 2018/6/27 20:28
Meitetsu Nagoya Station is under the ground.
The Meitetsu platforms are on the 2nd basement.
The Meitetsu ticket gates are on the 1st basement.

(1) You can get out through the West Gate,
and go up the nearby escalator to the ground.

(2) You turn to the left, walk a little,
cross the road at the pedestrian crossing,
and reach the Hirokoji Entrance of Nagoya Station.

(3) You go into Nagoya Station, turn to the right,
and walk for about 100 meters
until you see escalators up for the Sakura-dori Exit
on your right.

(4) You turn to the left,
and walk on the Central Walkway for about 150 meters
until you find the Shinkansen North Gate on your right.

Same old, same old. Do you plan to ever articulate what those purported "problematic issues" are and what service should bd used instead, or are you just going to repeat this line forever?

I have 1 more question, is it possible at Nagoya Chubu (ngo) airport to pin money with a creditcard (mastercard) at an atm? Can you pay the trainticket only cash at the loket or also with a card? ( because I don’t want to use the automatic ticket machines yet because it is my first time and I’m afraid I don’t know how they work, I’d better have someone sitting in person at a loket where I can buy the trainticket).

Nothing wrong with hyperdia. Use the correct station names and it work fine.

Dont know the station names. Look at google maps first. Simple.

Re: Train Travel 2018/7/4 07:18
There is ATM in the airport, read the NGO("Centrair" is airport nick) site.
http://www.centrair.jp/en/
http://www.centrair.jp/en/services/exchange/
But exchange rate will change everyday you know,
so it is may better to get the JPY before departure or transit country as total.
https://www.xe.com/en/currencyconverter/convert/?Amount=1&From=EUR&To=...

Unfortunately "Meitetsu" accept cash only, credit cards can not be used.
(Not write it on English page, but explained on Japanese page Q&A.)
http://www.meitetsu.co.jp/eng/sitemap/index.html
http://www.meitetsu.co.jp/qa/train/ticket/index.html
Although, "Mastercard" and some int'l brand cards can be used in "JR".
http://faq.jr-central.co.jp/detail/faq000078.html

And, there are English button on the ticket vending machines, very easy, watch this.
https://youtu.be/yKvUdYSn2nc
But be careful not to forget the tickets and change.
This YouTuber couple took the fastest direct Limited Express "μ(mu:) sky" in white/blue color one,
http://www.meitetsu.co.jp/eng/ticket-info/ticket.html
but also you can take cheaper and slower direct train if you have enough time.
You already learned about "HyperDia" how to, just uncheck "Limited Express" and "Japan Railway(JR)".
The screen of the ticket vending machine may easier to see.
https://youtu.be/0QDG8mm-Ex4
(This couple is not Japanese, they are "Taiwanese", speaking "Chinese".)

Shinkansen that stop in GifuHashima from Nagoya station in around 30 mins.
No need to panic, but many different shinkansen trains that skipping GifuHashima,
please check the train name over and over again at dep info board.
All "Kodama" will be stopping, but some "Hikari" will not be.
http://english.jr-central.co.jp/info/timetable/_pdf/westbound.pdf
GifuHashima is next station, 11 mins short ride, no need reserved seat.

And you can order reserved seat tickets all of later date JR trains when exchange.
If you do not hurry, you better order at Gifu Hashima station in bulk.
(JR Nagoya station is biggest in Nagoya area, means many customers using.)
Easy documentation is required for exchange to Japan Rail Pass, like this.
