Dec/Jan weather in Kyushu

Hi there,
What's the general weather like in Kyushu around late Dec/early Jan? We plan to go to Japan 12/24-1/5, and want to do a side trip (3-6 days) besides Tokyo. Traveling with kids, are there enough to do there in the winter?

Depends on what you wana do.

The great beaches wont be appealing in winter. The awesome mountain hikes will probably be too cold to do.

But just doing the regular bland tourist stuff like museums and temples etc is doable.

At this time of year you'll need to be mindful of the many closures due to the busy New Year holiday season. Also, the long distance trains are booked out months in advance I'm told, making travel quite difficult. So think about flying rather than train, or picking a base in a largish city and doing day trips.
