Shimami Kaido - cycling 2018/7/31 17:10
Hi,
Shimami Kaido connects 6 islands, is it possible if I only want to cycle from Onomichi to Ikuchijima island then return back to Onomichi . I'm a very basic cyclist, do you think how much time I need to do all my plan above?
Is there any rest area along the bicycle road?

Thank you so much

I got on the Shinkansen and JR line and arrived at Onomichi at 9:00 am from Kyoto. I went to Setoguchi by ship and borrowed a bicycle there. I went to the Oyamazumi shrine, and back to Setoguchi afterwards through the north of Omishima to Setoguchi. I returned on a ship to Onomichi, and I arrived there past 5:00 pm.
I stayed at the Onomichi at the night, next morning I got on the ship to Tomonoura watching the scenery of the shipyard.

Thank you for your response. I'm still thinking to go all the way from Onomachi to Imabari and back to Onomachi by bus, but I couldn't figure it out how long do I need until Imabari by bicycle . Do I need stay overnight at Imabari. My plan I'll leave Onomachi around 9 AM.

If you are the profesional cyclist, it should be possible.
It would be take 4-6 hours for general person to run the whole distance.

It might be better to stay in Imabari.

I would challenge this 4-6 h for a normal rider. It is 80-100 km depending on if you do some small detours. 80 km in 4 h thatfs 20 km/h steadily. This is obviously doable but itfs not entirely flat and you have to maintain the speed. Also you will stop often to admire the landscape take pictures etc. which easily adds 2 h. If you then want to visit some shrine , temple on the way. Add an other 1-2 h. Have lunch....

I found it enjoyable to do in 2 days. But it obviously depends on your personal speed and (!) on the type of bicycle you rent. The normal ones are a mamachari type. You canft really ride fast or far with them.

Here my experience: https://bicycletraveljapan.blogspot.com/2017/11/part-10-day-48-49-ridi....

In the planning section there is also more general information on the ride.

Enjoy riding the Shimanami Kaido!
