Second week in Japan 2018/8/28 03:49
We plan to visit Japan on the second half of coming October. We booked already the first week in Tokyo and seek advice on programming the second.

Ive been alreday several times in Japan on business trips and managed to see the main attractions near Tokyo and Kyoto. Our idea for the second week is to stay at places where to get contact with people, landscape and tradition. A nice Ryokan/ Onsen and walks in mountain forest (it's fall season) or seashore etc..

Any specific suggestion would be grately appreciated :)

it's fall season

If you want to see autumn colors then you should go north or into mountains.

Buy JR East Pass Tohoku Area

and plan your trip. If it is October leaves in Tokyo, Kyoto and surrounding areas are still green.

You might enjoy Shibu Onsen and the walks up into the monkey park. I'm not sure you could keep busy for a whole week there though.

Tohoku would definitely be a great place to go. Eg:
Day 1 Tokyo - Yamagata, visit Yamadera
Day 2 Yamagata -Kakunodate-Tazawako
Day 3 Nyuto onsen
Day 4 Hachimantai
Day 5 Tono valley
Day 6 Hiraizumi
Day 7 Nikko

Or something like that. Culture, Nature , onsen. And not so many tourists.

Enjoy planning your trip to Japan!

Izu may be one of the best places to go for the combination of elements you're seeking. It has beautiful seashore, mountains and forest, great onsen and plentiful opportunities to experience local traditions and interact with local people. In terms of getting outdoors and seeing some cultural attractions, you could try izuhike.com. Any of the towns on the Izu coast have good onsen. Shimoda is especially nice and has picturesque old streets and temples, farmers markets in the countryside and beautiful beaches and mountains. Shuzenji, though not a coastal town, is lovely and offers wonderful local artisans shops and hot springs.

Sorry to hijack this thread. We are book for Oct as well (16th -27th). How is the weather that time ? We are coming from New Zealand so for us it's spring which is 11 or 12 degrees. Do we need jackets that time or just shorts, t shirt, skirts will do ?

Thanks

As you see it is somewhat warmer than October in New Zealand but you should bring sweater and jacket for cold days/nights. Also it depends on the place in Japan you will be traveling. Enjoy nice trip!

After looking up the diverse places suggested, we chose two spots for staying 2-3 days in each one, since our style is not too much to do check-in/check-out and to try to reach the most in terms of points visited. The places we chose are
1. Shimoda in the Izu peninsula
2. Yamagata to the north to enjoy the autumn views.

Any feedback on those choices? Are them right for doing side-trips? Special recommendations on what to see, where to stay etc..

Thanks again!
