Enjoying autumn colors-end of October 2018/9/7 15:04
Looking for advice regarding where to enjoy autumn colors at end of coming October, I understand it is too early for Tokyo or Kyoto and we should head for the north. Do we need to go as far as Hokkaido or are there places nearer to Tokyo? Could you recommend specific places, which are cool and interesting in that region?-Thanks a lot

The region around Hachimantai, Tazawako, Towadako and also more to the South Yamadera should be good at end of October. There will be a autumn colour forecast page on this web page similar to the one for Sakura where you can follow where the best viewing spots are. Have a look at the reports from last year.

Tazawako is easily reachable by Shinkansen from Tokyo. Hachimantai is reachable from there by bus or rental car. Towadako is a bit harder to reach, I think you need to take Shinkansen to Aomori and then bus. Yamadera is also good to reach by Shinkansen to Yamagata and then a small local train for a few stops.

The entire Tohoku area has a lot to offer (e.g. Hiraizumi, Tono, Ginzan onsen, Zao onsen, the coastline of Sendai...) so you can easily spend there a week or more. Also it does not get that many foreign tourists as elsewhere in Japan which is enjoyable. A specific JR pass for Tohoku exists which is convenient specially for the slower paced travellers.

Enjoy your trip to Japan!

One recommendation is the mountainside places like Tateyama.

Though it might be long distance from Tokyo.
