Travel to Hokkaido 2018/9/9 13:59
Dear Sir/Madam,

My family plan to travel to Hokkaido from September 12 to September 16, 2018. We will first fly to New Chitose and go to Sapporo and Otaru on the next days. Due to the earthquake, could you please suggest me to keep my travel schedule or cancel it?

Thank you very much.

Thanh Hien.

Frankly, I think it may be a little early as the cities are still recovering from the shortages of electricity and other things. I think that the situation should normalize within about a week, but your departure date falls into a time period for which several issues are still unknown. For example, currently many tourist facilities are still closed and the reopening dates are not decided yet.

If you could postpone your visit to the week of the 17th, I would recommend to postpone it. I suspect that tourism facilities will have recovered by then.

Check out your hotel's website. It will tell you about the hotel's situation. Below is the announcement from one of the biggest and oldest hotel Sapporo Grand.

If this is the situation, then I would go. Of course it depends on the preference and the cancelation fee etc.

After researching more, I came to the conclusion that a vast majority of tourist attractions, hotels, shops and restaurants in Sapporo, Otaru and other destinations across Hokkaido will have reopened by tomorrow (9/10). And the power situation is getting better and better and seems pretty much over by around 9/13.

Considering this, I would probably go ahead with the trip. Hokkaido tourism will be glad if not everybody is cancelling their trips.

You plan to travel very soon;
another strong earthquake may occur in Hokkaido during your upcoming trip.

Sapporo City seems not yet perfectly ready to welcome travelers.

It seems Sapporo or Otaru has not got most severely struck;
however,
these two cities (and also Chitose City where the airport is located)
are near the area where the seismic activity has been at its high level for these several days.

If you are accustomed to reacting to a sudden strong shake,
maybe you can feel relatively safe and fully enjoy your trip.
Otherwise, you had better leave it for another opportunity;
Hokkaido will still be there.
