Unless things have changed down south, the answer is two-fold...

Yes, you can use a credit card to purchase a train ticket at the train station office no matter the location in Japan.

No, smart cards such as Icoca and Suica etc. require a CASH-ONLY deposit of Y500 and then an initial CASH load of Y1500 so you pay Y2000 CASH for the card. All subsequent reloads of the cards are in CASH only.

Others on the board, correct me if I am wrong please...

Thanks.

Thank you. Either itfs the rain here in Vancouver or my brain is not working!
Does this mean I can buy the card at the ticket counter with a credit card but from there on I can only top up with cash. 😬😬😬😬😬

ICOCA Card is not a pass to allow you to travel at a fixed-amount cost;
you pay (bus or railway) fees as you go.

An IC transportation card (of Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, etc.)
saves your time to handle cash and (short-distance railway) paper tickets.

You cannot link your credit card to your ICOCA Card.
You need cash
for the 500-yen deposit
and for the e-money stored on the card.

There is also SMART ICOCA,
which requires your credit card
both when you buy one and when you store e-money.
SMART ICOCA seems not available
to foreign travelers (other than local residents).

I am sorry to sound so hmm, silly, not the correct word. I was told to get the icoca card and put 5000 yen on it. This way I can travel from KIX to Namba Station. I can use it to travel Osaka and Kyoto on the train and bus. Was I mis informed.
I am a senior so maybe thatfs why the confusion I am having. 😊 I apologize for being a nuisance.

Re: KIX to Namba, then to Kyoto 2018/9/17 05:54
It is really the main purpose of this forum, I suppose,
to help you to travel in Japan.
Please feel free to ask what you are not sure about your Japan trips!

I was told to get the icoca card and put 5000 yen on it.
This way I can travel from KIX to Namba Station.

Yes;
just with your ICOCA card,
you can take a Nankai non-Limited-Express train to Namba,
whose seats cannot be reserved;
the basic fare is deducted from the e-money stored on the card.

Actually there is a Nankai discount ticket
for your ride between the airport station and Namba Station
on a Limited Express train,
where your seat reservation is necessary.
This discount ticket covers
both the basic fare and the Limited Express surcharge.
(IC cards basically cannot be used to pay surcharges.)

https://www.howto-osaka.com/en/ticket/ticket/tokuwari.html

Nankai Electric Railway and West Japan Railway [JR-West]
are the two rail companies who serve Kansai Airport [KIX].
They each manage one station in KIX Terminal 1.

ICOCA cards are issued by JR-West;
in KIX Terminal 1,
you visit a JR counter or ticket vending machine
to get your ICOCA card,
even when you will use it for a non-JR train ride.

(The railway operations
between the airport island and the mainland,
which have been suspended
due to damages caused by the recent typhoon,
are expected to be resumed soon on the 18th of September.)

I am a senior so maybe thatfs why the confusion I am having.

Is Namba Station of Nankai close to your first destination?

In Namba there are several stations of the same or similar names:
Namba Stations of Nankai and of subway (Osaka Metro),
Osaka Namba Stations of Hankyu and Hanshin (in the same building),
JR-Namba Station of JR-West, etc.

Do you hope to use elevators and escalators rather than staircases?

Re: correction 2018/9/17 06:03
Let me correct a mistake in my previous response.
: "Hankyu" should be "Kintetsu";
Osaka Namba Stations are stations of Kintetsu and Hanshin.

Re: payment method 2018/9/17 06:04
Currently in Japan,
credit card is not very common as a daily payment method.
That may be a problem to be immediately solved if possible,
while more foreign travelers are visiting Japan these years.

Oh wow, so thank you that you have patience with me. I am staying at Namba Oriental Hotel and was told to get off at Namba Station and walk 10 minutes to the hotel.
