Good onsen towns near Osaka/Kyoto

Hello everybody, I'm coming back to Japan once again and being autumn, temperatures will be perfect to soak in some hot spring waters. I really like onsen towns so since I'll stay mostly in Kyoto, I'd like to know if there are good onsen towns in the area which are NOT Kinosaki or Arima (I've been to both already). I'm looking for characteristic towns, good waters and if possible no more than 2 or max 3 hours from Kyoto, because most probably I'll manage only a day trip. If I had time I would go to Yufuin, Kurokawa or Kusatsu, which are at the top of my wishlist, but almost certainly they will be reserved for another time given the distance from Kyoto. Arigato gozaimasu to all!

You could try Dorogawa onsen. Nice onsen town with old buildings and good nature around that invites for hikes or shorter walks.
Enjoy soaking!

Not sure if it's any good, I will be visiting Arima Onsen in a weeks time, it's located near Kobe.

Otogo and Dorogawa seem like very interesting places, I didn't know them, hopefully I can visit both! Kaga might be a bit too far instead. Thanks a bunch all!
